Recent Asheville kitchen lighting install — Power to the People

The single most common light-fixture mistake we fix in older Asheville homes: a heavy ceiling fan mounted to a standard junction box that's not fan-rated. Fan-rated boxes are required by code for ceiling fans because the cyclic load eventually pulls a non-rated box loose from the joist. We see fans hanging by their wiring more often than we'd like in pre-2000 homes.

So when you call us for a "simple ceiling fan install," the first thing we check is the box. If it's not fan-rated (and it usually isn't on older fixtures), the fix takes 15-20 extra minutes and replaces a hidden hazard. That's why the fan install is sometimes $250 instead of $150 — and it's not optional.

What we install

The full range — and what each one actually involves.

Ceiling fans

Most common gotcha: non-fan-rated ceiling box. We replace before mounting. Includes balance and remote pairing if applicable.

Asheville note: mountain homes with cathedral ceilings often need a downrod sized to the slope. Bring the fan model — we'll size the rod.

Pendants + chandeliers

Most common gotcha: fixture weight exceeds the box rating. Heavy chandeliers (>50 lbs) need a fan-rated or saddle-bracket box.

Common request: dimmer install with the fixture. Make sure the bulbs you're using are dimmable LED — half the dimmer flicker complaints we get are bulb-side issues.

Recessed lighting

Insulation contact (IC) rating: if your attic has blown-in insulation (most Asheville homes), the cans must be IC-rated to avoid a fire hazard.

Sizing: 4-inch cans for accent / kitchen islands, 6-inch for general room lighting. Spacing is room height divided by 2 in feet.

Outdoor + landscape

Asheville climate: wet-rated for porch ceilings, damp-rated for covered exterior, weatherproof outlets at minimum. We use low-voltage landscape lighting where possible to simplify the install.

Common request: dusk-to-dawn fixtures with photocell. Reliable, no smart-home dependency, no batteries.
